What is a Skills Assessment?
A skills assessment is an official evaluation of your qualifications and work experience by an approved assessing body. It confirms that your skills match your nominated occupation and meet Australian standards.
Different occupations are assessed by different bodies. For example:
- Engineers are assessed by Engineers Australia
- Nurses are assessed by AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority) or the relevant nursing board
- Trades are assessed by VETASSESS or similar bodies
- IT professionals are assessed by ACS (Australian Computer Society)
- Accountants are assessed by CPA Australia or other accounting bodies
Your skills assessment is required for:
- Expression of Interest (EOI) lodging
- Skilled visa applications (189, 190, 491)
- Skilled migration sponsorship visas (182, 186)
Skills Assessment Validity Periods
Skills assessments have limited validity periods. The validity period depends on the assessing body and, in some cases, the type of assessment.
*Typical validity periods:*
- Most occupations: 3 years from the date of assessment
- Some healthcare occupations: 2 years
- Some specialized assessments: Varies by assessing body
Check the document. Your skills assessment letter should clearly state the expiry date. This is the date after which the Department may not accept it for visa applications.
When Does Your Assessment Expire?
Your skills assessment is valid from the issue date until the expiry date stated in your letter. After the expiry date, the Department will not accept it as evidence that you meet the skilled requirement for visa applications.
For example:
- Assessment issued: 1 March 2023
- Typical validity: 3 years
- Expiry date: 1 March 2026
- After 1 March 2026, the assessment is no longer valid
Why Does Validity Matter?
If your skills assessment expires:
- You cannot lodge an EOI (you need a current assessment)
- You cannot be invited to apply for a visa (EOIs with expired assessments are not invited)
- If you’ve already received an invitation to apply but your assessment expires before you lodge the visa application, complications can arise
The key is to plan your visa application timeline around your skills assessment expiry date.
How does it work in practice?
Scenario 1: Your original assessment expires before you’re invited.
- You lodged an EOI with a valid assessment in 2023
- Your assessment expires in March 2026
- You don’t receive an invitation until April 2026 (after your assessment expires)
- You can get a new skills assessment between April and early June 2026
- This new assessment, obtained within 60 days of your invitation, satisfies the requirement
- You can then lodge your visa application
Scenario 2: Your assessment expires after you receive an invitation but before you lodge.
- You lodge an EOI with a valid assessment
- You receive an invitation to apply in February 2026
- Your assessment expires in March 2026
- You have until early May 2026 to get a new assessment
- Any assessment obtained during this window satisfies the requirement
Planning Around Your Assessment Expiry
Step 1: Know your expiry date. Check your skills assessment letter. Note the exact expiry date.
Step 2: Plan your EOI timing. If your assessment is valid, lodge your EOI well before it expires. Aim to lodge 6–12 months before expiry if possible.
Step 3: Monitor invitation rounds. Keep track of the Department’s invitation rounds and what points levels are being invited. Assess your chances of being invited before your assessment expires.
Step 4: Have a Plan B. If you’re approaching expiry and haven’t been invited, consider:
- Geting a new assessment before your current one expires (safest option)
- Improving your points (English, employment history) to increase chances of invitation before expiry
Step 5: Act early if needed. Don’t wait until your assessment expires. If you’re close to expiry and want to apply for a visa, get a new assessment while your current one is still valid.
Geting a New Skills Assessment
If your current assessment is expired or about to expire:
- Contact the same assessing body. Most bodies allow you to apply for reassessment.
- Prepare new documentation. You’ll need to submit updated employment records, qualifications, and any other required documentation. The process is similar to your original assessment.
- Allow time for processing. Skills assessments can take 4–12 weeks to process, depending on the assessing body and complexity. Plan accordingly.
- Cost implications. Reassessment costs vary by body but typically range from AUD $300–$1000+. Budget for this.
Common Mistakes with Skills Assessment Expiry
Mistake 1: Forgetting the expiry date.
Many applicants lodge an EOI and then don’t check whether their assessment is still valid months later. Set a reminder on your calendar for 3 months before expiry.
Mistake 2: Waiting too long to lodge an EOI.
If your assessment will expire in 12 months, don’t wait 11 months to lodge your EOI. Get it in early so you have time to receive an invitation.
Mistake 4: Not geting a new assessment soon enough.
If your assessment is expiring and you haven’t been invited, don’t wait until it expires to get a new one. Get one while your current assessment is still valid, just to be safe.
Mistake 5: Assuming all assessing bodies have the same validity period.
Validity varies by body and occupation. Check your specific assessment letter.
Strategic Planning: Assessment Validity and Your Timeline
Scenario A: You’re far from expiry (18+ months remaining)
- You have plenty of time to lodge your EOI
- Monitor invitation rounds and plan accordingly
- No rush to get a new assessment
Scenario B: You’re approaching expiry (6–12 months remaining)
- Lodge your EOI immediately if you haven’t already
- Monitor invitation rounds closely
- If you’re not invited by month 6, consider geting a new assessment
- Don’t wait until your assessment expires
Scenario C: You’re very close to expiry (less than 6 months remaining)
- If you have an outstanding EOI, consider geting a new assessment now to make sure continuity
- Act quickly, don’t let your assessment expire without a backup plan
When You Receive an Invitation: The Critical Window
When you receive an invitation to apply for a visa:
- Note the invitation date and acceptance deadline. You typically have 7 days to accept the invitation.
- Note your skills assessment status. Is it still valid? When does it expire?
- Plan your assessment strategy:
- If your current assessment is valid for 60+ days after the invitation date, you can proceed using your current assessment
- If your current assessment has already expired, you must get a new one within 60 days of the invitation
- Apply for reassessment if needed. Contact your assessing body immediately if you need a new assessment.
- You receive an invitation on 15 March 2026
- Your current skills assessment expires on 10 April 2026
- You have until 14 May 2026 (60 days from invitation) to get a new assessment
- Any assessment obtained by 14 May 2026 satisfies the skills requirement
- If you get a new assessment on 1 May 2026, it’s valid for your application even though your original assessment is expired
What if Your EOI Expires Before You’re Invited?
EOIs are valid for up to 12 months. If you don’t receive an invitation within 12 months, your EOI expires.
If this happens:
- Your skills assessment may still be valid (if it hasn’t expired)
- You can lodge a new EOI with your current (valid) skills assessment
- You’ll enter a new EOI round and be considered for future invitations
Multi-Cycle Applications and Assessment Validity
Some applicants apply over multiple EOI rounds:
- First EOI with assessment obtained in 2023 (expires 2026)
- Not invited in first round
- Second EOI with new assessment obtained in 2025 (expires 2028)
- Invited in second round with the 2025 assessment
Always use the most current assessment in your active EOI.

If you’re applying for skilled migration, your skills assessment has an expiry date. But there’s a grace period you should know about.
A skills assessment obtained within 60 days after receiving an invitation to apply for a visa satisfies the requirement, even if your original assessment is expired.
Why this matters:
You receive an invitation. Your assessment expires next month. You have 60 days from the invitation to get a new one. That new assessment is valid for your application.
Timeline Example:
- Invitation: 15 March 2026
- Original assessment expires: 10 April 2026
- Grace period deadline: 14 May 2026
- Get new assessment by 14 May → Valid for your application
Standard Validity:
Most skills assessments are valid for 3 years from issue date. After expiry, the Department won’t accept them.
Key Planning Points:
✓ Know your assessment expiry date (check your letter)
✓ Lodge your EOI well before expiry
